The Exile Book Description

I know I put this at the bottom of the blog, but I wanted to put it up again.  This is the description for book one, available on Amazon.com, as an e-book.

The Legacy of the Drevnik: The Exile (Book 1 of 4)

In The Legacy of the Drevnik: The Exile Lan’Drin, a young Frost Elf, loses everyone he holds dear.  His Uncle, who is like a father to him, killed his parents.  His fiancĂ© is killed by her father.  When his death is ordered Lan’Drin is forced to leave his home.  Only with the help of a dragon and some new friends can he find a way to take back his home.  As he tries to find answers to help make sense of his life and his losses, Lan’Drin finds out that the troubles of his people are only one part of the scheme of the mysterious mages called the Sovershenik.  Not all hope is lost, the powerful magic of the ancient Drevnik is found in an unlikely place.  Lan’Drin also learns that the history of his people, the Sovershenik, and the history of the long forgotten Drevnik are all important if he wants to help his people and put an end to the troubles that are engulfing the continent of Tselestial.

The first book in the series, The Exile, follows Lan’Drin as he journeys to learn the skills and knowledge necessary to free his people.  After years of training Lan’Drin and his friends head to Klan Gorod to join the Fighters Klan and find allies in his fight against an ever growing threat.  Along the way enemies arise and plots become known that make Lan’Drin realize that he and his people are just a small part of the plan that has been unfolding for decades.  Behind it all seems to lurk the Sovershenik, powerful mages that rebelled, left the Drevnik, and disappeared into history thousands of years ago.

Q & A: Keh'Uldav and the Drevnik

Let me start by making sure we are all on the same page.  When a "journal entry" is written, it is written from the perspective of Keh'Uldav (one of the characters in the book).  When a "Q & A" is written, I will be doing it as the author of the series answering questions.  Hopefully that isn't too confusing.

Q: Are you going to give more information or a description of who Keh'Uldav and his people, the Drevnik, are?

A: Yes and no.  Keh'Uldav plays a part in book one, as well as the rest of the story.  I don't want to give too much away, because I think finding out about him is part of the story as you read it.  What I can say is that he's powerful and old.  He's lived for over fifteen thousand years.  I won't say how and I won't really won't say anything else about him.  Maybe after book two is out I'll talk more about him.  His story is part of the legacy of the Drevnik that the series is titled after.  I don't want to give too much, because as I said finding out about him might take away from the story as you read it.

As far as the Drevnik are concerned, I've written that they were an ancient people.  They learned how to prolong their lives, and they dominated Tselestial.  They were very powerful manipulators of the elements, the magic system of the world of Mirr.  I'll explain the magic system in a later post.  I run into the same problem with the Drevnik as I do with Keh'Uldav.  I don't want to give too much away.  After reading book one you'll have a better understanding of the Drevnik.  Maybe not a complete knowledge, that will come later, but a better understanding.

Thanks for the question and I hope this helps somewhat.  For now, with only one book out I have to be careful what I do and don't say, because I don't want to ruin the story.  I'll answer any questions I can, and more "journal entry" posts will come.

Journal Entry: Dragons

I approach the subject of dragons with care.  I do so because of the hate that has been directed towards them for the role they played when my people controlled Tselestial.  Their role is a subject for another time, but I will try to give these magnificent creates the credit and respect they are due.  Dragons are an ancient race, perhaps the most ancient of all races.  They existed before the Drevnik gained power.  This may seem like it has no bearing on the matter, but the Drevnik were in power for many thousands of years.  I lack the words to sufficiently explain the experience and knowledge of the dragon race.  Suffice it to say that no one knows how long dragons have existed.

There are three species of dragon: black, white, and silver.  Each type of Dragon has a unique society and way of life.  Dragons are very intelligent, even the most ignorant dragon would be a genius by most race’s standards, and because of their long life spans (three to five thousand years) they are great sources of experience and knowledge.  Dragons can speak their own language, the ancient language used by my people, and the common language used by other races.

Dragons range in size from about ten feet from shoulders to ground and a neck span of about fifteen feet (Silver dragons), to about twenty-five feet from shoulders to ground and a neck span of about thirty feet (White dragons), to about forty-five feet from shoulders to ground and a neck span of about fifty feet (Black Dragons).  The actual measurement varies depending upon each dragon, their maturity, and the sex of the dragon.  Silver dragons are about forty feet in length from head to tail and have the same length wingspan.  White dragons are about eighty feet from head to tail and have the same length wingspan.  Black dragons are about one hundred and thirty feet from head to tail and have the same length wingspan.  As with height, the exact length and wingspan depends on the dragon, how mature the dragon is, and the sex of the dragon.

Dragons have one scale color, with no difference in the color of the under belly, and the irises of their eyes match their scale color, with black slit-like pupils.  Most dragons also have horns, the same color as their scales, on top of their heads.   Silver Dragons also have horns on their tails, which are the same color as their scales.  Dragons use their claws, horns, jagged teeth and tails as weapons.  They also use their size to their advantage, whether it is small or large.  Dragons have four legs which they use to move and maneuver on the ground.  Each species of dragon also has, for lack of a better word, a type of breath weapon.  These will be discussed further as each type of dragon is explained and documented.

As I stated earlier, dragons have been hated by the people of Tselestial since the fall of the Drevnik because of their role in my people’s society.  Because of this dragons have gone into hiding, and are very aggressive when they are found.  A Dragon will usually kill first and ask questions later (this unspoken general rule is rarely ever broken by any kind of Dragon), especially when protecting themselves, mates, or family depending on which kind of Dragon it is.  Approach a dragon at your own risk.

Sometimes dragons form some type of relationship with a person or people, but it is rare (especially with Black Dragons).  Dragons do not usually communicate with Dragons of another type.  It does happen, but there is usually a purpose to it and is not a normal occurrence.

I will now do my best to describe each type of dragon.  I hope whoever reads this understands that I have the utmost respect for each type of dragon.  They have shown me and my people great respect and I will try to return that respect as I describe them.

Journal Entry: Black Dragons

Black dragons are the largest of the three types of dragons, but they are also the slowest in the air and on the ground.  They have two horns on top of their heads and one on the top of their snouts.  The horn on their snout points straight up and the horns on their heads angle backward and curve downward in a circle until the tips point forward below their jaws.  They are the least intelligent of the dragons, but even a black dragon would be considered extremely intelligent when compared with other races.  Black dragons live alone except when mating.

Black dragons are very selfish. The best example I can come up with to characterize a black dragon would be this example.  If someone were to come upon two black dragons who were trying to mate, neither dragon would defend the other.  Black dragons do not ever choose permanent mates, but will mate with as many different black dragons as they want.  These magnificent beasts prefer a hot desert climate to any other climate.  They also live in caves and caverns, further separating themselves from the outside world.  Black dragons are known to search out and hoard treasures and trophies.  By nature they are very arrogant and flattered easily, or for the right price.

Black dragons have a fire breath that can be expelled at will.  I would hope that I do not have to explain how deadly and or dangerous that can be.  A black dragon’s fire breath grows stronger and increases in heat as they mature.

My description of a black dragon may seem very self centered and greedy.  I am not saying this is wrong, but do not underestimate them.  Even though they are the least intelligent of the dragons, they are still very clever and wise.

Journal Entry: White Dragons

White dragons are mid-sized compared to the other two types of Dragons. They are not as fast as silver dragons, but they are much faster than black dragons.  White dragons are the most intelligent of dragons.  White dragons have small horns, like spikes, that go across the ridges above their eyes almost like eyebrows.  These dragons also have two horns on either side of the crown of their heads that are straight and angled back.

White dragons live in family groups and will only expand their group to allow a younger male white dragon’s mate into the grouping.  White dragons have one chosen mate at a time, but do not always choose a new mate if their mate dies.  White dragons are friendly and communicate with other groups of white dragons and will defend other groups, but their loyalty lies with their family group.

If you were to characterize these dragons they would likely be characterized as neutral.  They are not necessarily good or evil.  The best way to describe them would be to say they watch and observe the world around them while staying apart.  They have strict laws between themselves.  White Dragons do not hoard treasures, but know the value of it and do collect treasure.  White Dragons prefer the frozen northern climates of the world of Mirr.  They most often live on the ground or up on high cliffs or mountains.

White dragons have a frost breath.  At will they can control the temperature of their breath, making it chilly to deathly cold.  The control of their frost breath increases as they mature.

The white dragons are the most difficult to deal with.  They are too intelligent to trick, and it is difficult to gain their assistance.  They are content with life.  However, I must note that when a white dragon aids you, the dragon will likely stay with you until one of you dies.  Once their trust is gained they are extremely loyal.  If you find yourself in this situation be aware that the other white dragons of the family grouping will likely not be pleased with you or your friend.  Be cautious.

Journal Entry: Silver Dragons

Silver dragons are the smallest of the dragons, but they are fairly intelligent for Dragons.  Silver dragons are glad that they are so small compared to the other two types of Dragons, because they can hide easier, fly faster, and move quicker on the ground.  These dragons have horn like spikes on their tails.  They have eight spikes in all, two on top, two on bottom, and two on each side as well as one at the end of their tails.  These spike horns do not protrude far, but are sharp like swords and are used skillfully by silver dragons as weapons.

Silver dragons would easily be characterized as good.  Silver Dragons cherish virtue and honor and justice and mercy.  They live as one community.  Silver dragons try to treat other races as fairly as they can, and try to be merciful in all their acts but are as protective of their kind as other dragons.  Silver dragons live in the Grove of the Ancients and make their nests among the trees or in hidden places throughout the forest.  Silver dragons choose one mate for life.  The older more experienced dragons make the general rules for their society, but they all participate in their community.  Silver dragons sometimes may take treasures, but only to give as a gift or to someone that is in need.  The other two types of dragons think that silver dragons are weak for their kindness, but silver dragons see their goodness as their strength.

For lack of a better way to describe the breath weapon of a silver dragon, I will say that it is like a sonic blast.  Unlike the other two types of dragons a younger silver dragon’s sonic breath is more powerful because they lack the experience and knowledge of how to limit it.  Once they learn how to control it it can knock opponents to the ground or come close to causing earth quakes.

Although silver dragons have been characterized as good, I would caution anyone who tries to seek them out.  Silver dragons have been hunted like white and black dragons.  If they feel threatened they will attack.  Do not be fooled by their smaller size.  Silver dragons are just as deadly as their black dragon cousins.
